UCO Ends Skid

HAYS, Kan. (March 28) – Ashleigh Tramel broke out of a hitting slump, Kelsey Berlin threw a three-hitter and Central Oklahoma snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 second-game victory over Fort Hays State here Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos dropped the opener 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning for their second consecutive walk-off loss before bouncing back in the nightcap.  UCO improved to 22-11 on the season and 8-4 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play, while the Tigers fell to 17-14 and 10-6.

"It was a rough weekend and we needed that win," head coach Cody White said.  "We didn't take advantage of all the scoring chances we had, but Ashleigh came up with a couple of big hits and Kelsey pitched well.  We ended on a positive note and that was the important thing."

Tramel entered the second game with just one hit in her previous 14 at bats, but the sophomore catcher keyed the offense with a 2-for-3, three-RBI performance at the plate while also making a diving catch of a foul ball for a big sixth inning out.

Berlin struck out seven, walked five and gave up just one unearned run in a 121-pitch complete-game outing.  She didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning and retired the last five batters of the game.

Tramel belted her team-high eighth home run of the season in the second, a massive solo shot to left field that gave UCO a lead it never relinquished.  The Bronchos made it 2-0 in the fourth when Rachel Harper reached on a two-out bunt single and raced home on Shelby Carel's triple down the right field line.

UCO pushed its advantage to 4-0 in the fifth on Tramel's two-out double to left field that scored Ally Dziadula and Morgan Heard, who had earlier singled.

FHSU scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth with help of an error, but Berlin got the final two outs of that inning and put the Tigers down in order in the seventh to seal the deal.

Ashton Smith came up with a big defensive play in the third when FHSU had runners on second and third with one out after consecutive walks and a wild pitch, snaring a line drive at third base and stepping on the bag to complete an inning-ending double play.

Kaylee Brunson went 3-for-4, while Tramel and Carel had two hits apiece to lead UCO's 10-hit attack.  Brunson was 10-for-15 during the four-game weekend, giving her 264 career hits in moving within four of the all-time school record.

The Bronchos managed just three hits and never threatened in the first six innings of the opener in trailing 1-0 before pushing across a run in their final at bat to force extra innings.

Brooke Zukerman started the seventh with a triple down the right field line and scored one out later on Tramel's perfect squeeze bunt to tie it and pitcher Nicole Brady got out a first-and-third jam in the bottom of the inning to extend the game.

UCO took its first lead in the eighth when Brunson led off with an infield single, went to third on Smith's base hit up the middle and scored on Zukerman's sacrifice fly to left-center field.

But the slim one-run lead didn't hold up long as the Tigers turned three hits and two walks into two runs in the bottom of the eighth to hand UCO its second straight walk-off loss.

The Bronchos finished with only six hits, getting two from Brunson.  Brady pitched well in the loss in giving up eight hits, including just two during one six-inning stretch.
