UNK Stuns No. 19 Bronchos

KEARNEY, Neb. (March 27) – Walks and a big bomb led to a stunning finish for No. 19-ranked Central Oklahoma at chilly Dryden Park here Friday afternoon.

Nebraska-Kearney used three walks, a grand slam and a run-scoring single to rally for five seventh inning runs in a 6-5 second-game victory that capped a shocking doubleheader sweep of the Bronchos.  The Lopers won the opener 8-6 before coming back to take the nightcap behind the late comeback.

"We had a tough day," head coach Cody White said.  "It's disappointing when you get 24 hits in two games and don't win, but we didn't pitch very well and made a lot of silly mistakes that really cost us in some situations.  We just have to put it behind us and get ready for tomorrow."

The Bronchos fell to 21-10 overall and 7-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with the two losses, while UNK improved to 9-20 and 7-7.  UCO continues league action Saturday in Hays, Kan. with a noon doubleheader against Fort Hays State.

UNK had only six hits in the second game, with three of those coming in its final at bat.

The Bronchos entered the inning with a 5-1 lead before a lead-off hit, back-to-back walks and a grand slam tied it.  Another free pass, a sacrifice bunt and two-out single then pushed across the winning run.

UCO had 13 hits in the contest, getting 4-for-4 outings from Kaylee Brunson and Morgan Heard while Emily Ditmore added two hits.

The Bronchos scored twice in the top of the first on Ashton Smith's run-scoring double and Brooke Zukerman's RBI single and it stayed 2-0 until the fifth when UNK hit a solo homer to get within a run.

UCO came back with two runs in the sixth as Shelby Carel lofted a sacrifice fly and Smith a run-scoring single, with the Bronchos making it 5-1 in the seventh when Head led off with a double to left field and ended up scoring on an error.

Heard went 3-for-4 and Ditmore had another two-hit game to lead an 11-hit attack in the opener, but the Lopers banged out 14 hits in earning the win.

Zukerman blasted a solo home in the second to answer a UNK run in the first and the Bronchos took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on RBI hits by Ditmore and Carel.

The Lopers tied it in the fourth before UCO went back on top in the top of the fifth on Heard's single to center field that plated Smith, who led off the inning with a double.

UNK regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs and added two more in the sixth to offset single scores by the Bronchos in the sixth and seventh.
