Berlin Leads UCO Past Lions

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (March 15) – Kelsey Berlin picked up both pitching wins with a workhorse day in the circle and No. 16-ranked Central Oklahoma swept a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader from Lindenwood here Sunday.

Berlin tossed a complete-game four-hit gem in a 2-0 first-game shutout before gaining the win with five innings of relief work in an 8-4 second-game triumph as the Bronchos improved to 18-6 on the season and 7-1 in the league.

"Kelsey threw really well today and gave us a big lift," head coach Cody White said.  "We struggled some offensively, but our defense was solid and we came out with a couple of good road wins."

Berlin gave up just seven hits and one unearned run in 12 innings on the day.  The senior left-hander didn't walk a batter and struck out seven in the two games in improving to 5-3.

UCO managed just six hits in the opener, scoring single runs in the second and fifth to take the win.

Brooke Zukerman gave the Bronchos a 1-0 lead with a rare inside-the-park home run in the top of the second, racing round the bases and scoring easily on a drive the right-center field gap.

UCO made it 2-0 in the fifth when Shelby Carel had a two-out single, went to second on an error and scored on Kaylee Brunson's base hit to right field.

The Bronchos took control early in the nightcap, erupting for eight runs on seven hits in their initial at bat.

Carel had the big blow when the freshman cranked out the first homer of her college career with a three-run bomb to right field.  Ashton Smith had a two-run single, while Devyn Frazier and Morgan Heard adding RBI hits during the big inning that saw UCO parade 13 batters to plate.

Lindenwood came back with two runs in the bottom of the first, but the Lions managed only two more the rest of the way and Carel gave up just one after coming on in the third.

Smith's 3-for-3 day led a 14-hit attack that saw Brunson, Frazier, Heard, Ally Dziadula and Emily Ditmore add two hits apiece.

The Bronchos return to conference play Wednesday with a home doubleheader against Washburn.
