No Hitter Earns Bronchos Split With Lincoln

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (March 14) – Jessi Walker threw a no-hitter in a 15-0 second-game rout that gave No. 16-ranked Central Oklahoma a doubleheader split with Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Lincoln here Saturday.

The Bronchos had a seven-game winning streak ended with a 7-5 setback in the opener before bouncing back with authority in the nightcap as Walker dominated in the circle.  UCO, now 16-6 overall and 5-1 in the league, moves on to Lindenwood for a noon doubleheader Sunday.

"We didn't come out ready to play and it cost us," head coach Cody White said.  "We can't afford to just show up, but hopefully we learned something from that.  Jessi pitched a great game and we were aggressive at the plate."

Walker struck out four and walked two in the five-inning no-hitter. The sophomore right-hander allowed only base runner on an error in improving to 6-1.

The Bronchos scored the only run they would need in the top of the first when Devyn Frazier singled, stole second and scored on Ally Dziadula's single, but the offensive fireworks were far from over.

UCO exploded for six runs in the third to make it 7-0 as Morgan Heard ripped a three-run home run to left-center field and Brooke Zukerman added a two-run double, with four-run volleys in the fourth and fifth inning completing the rout.

Ashton Smith drove in five of those eight runs with a three-run homer in the fourth and two-run double in the fifth, while Dziadula, Heard and Joely Rogers added RBI base hits.

Frazier went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead a 15-hit attack, with Dziadula, Heard, Smith and Emily Ditmore adding two hits apiece.

UCO took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on run-scoring hits by Dziadula and Zukerman, but the Blue Tigers answered with five runs in their first at bat to go ahead 5-2.

The Bronchos made it 5-4 in the second as Kaylee Brunson and Dziadula had RBI singles and then tied it in the fourth on Zukerman's run-scoring double.

UCO left the bases loaded in the fifth, Lincoln broke the deadlock in the sixth with a two-run homer and then held on to earn its first win of the season.

The Bronchos banged out 13 hits in the loss, led by Brunson's 4-for-5 effort.  Smith and Zukerman had two hits each.
