No. 10 Gorillas Top UCO

Box Score

EDMOND (Feb. 7) –
A long dry spell to end the first half and begin the second put Central Oklahoma in a big hole and the Bronchos never recovered in falling to No. 10-ranked Pittsburg State 68-51 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO was within one at 21-20 with 2:54 left in the first half after a short jumper by Chelsea Robinson, but the Gorillas went on an 18-2 run over the next seven minutes to push their lead to 19.

The Bronchos never got closer than 14 the rest of the way and lost for the second time in 10 days to PSU.  UCO fell to 14-9 on the season and 7-7 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play, while the Gorillas improved to 21-3 and 11-2.

"We didn't shoot the ball very well again and it's tough to beat any team let alone the good ones when you can't score," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "I thought we fought hard, but it got away from us a little bit at the end of the half."

The Bronchos shot just 30.2 percent (16-of-53) from the field, including 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from 3-point range.

Jordan Ward led UCO with a career-high 15 points, making 5-of-7 shots with two treys.  Julia Mason added 12 points as the only other player in double figures.

Both teams struggled early and combined to make just 3-of-17 shots in the first six minutes as the Bronchos led 4-2.  PSU was on top 6-5 when UCO came back with seven unanswered points to take its biggest lead.

Ward started that surge with a 3-pointer from the corner before coming up with a steal and driving layup seconds later.  Hayley Bryan capped the run with two free throws to make it 12-6 with 11:18 left in the half.

The Gorillas came right back with an 11-0 run to take the lead for good at 17-12 by the 7:05 mark.  UCO stayed close and was within one at 21-20 on Robinson's jumper at 2:54, but PSU ended the half with a 10-2 spurt to take a 31-22 halftime advantage.

Central then missed its first five shots of the second half and the Gorillas scored eight straight points to quickly push their lead to 17 (39-22) in ending all doubt to the outcome.

The Bronchos go on the road for their next three conference games before returning home Feb. 26 to host Fort Hays State.
