UCO Picks Up Big Road Win

Box Score

TOPEKA, Kan. (Feb. 12) –
Hayley Bryan scored five points during a 16-second span eight minutes into the game to put Central Oklahoma in front and the Bronchos went on to a crucial 75-64 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association triumph over Washburn here Thursday night.

Bryan's scoring barrage turned a 15-12 deficit into a 17-15 lead and UCO never trailed again en route to avenging a five-point home loss to the Ichabods three weeks ago.

"That was a huge win for us," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "Any win on the road in this conference is key and we came out ready to play tonight.  We made a lot of big shots and our defense was really good."

The Bronchos shot 52.7 percent (29-of-55) from the field and committed just eight turnovers while holding WU to 35.5 percent shooting in improving to 15-9 overall and 8-7 in the conference.

Julia Mason had 15 points to lead UCO's balanced attack that saw four players score in double figures.  Chelsea Robinson and Kylie Mayes added 13 points apiece while combining to make 11-of-14 shots with three 3-pointers and Olivia Mason chipped in 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Bryan scored seven points, with five coming during the game-turning surge.  The 6-foot junior forward made two free throws with 12:06 left in the first half to pull UCO within 15-14 and followed a Washburn miss with a 3-pointer from the top of the key at 11:50 to put the Bronchos on top to stay.

It was still a two-point lead at 23-21 when UCO went on a 13-3 run, getting 3-pointers from Mayes and Chelsi Dennis and a conventional three-point play from J. Mason in opening up a 36-24 advantage at the 3:15 mark.

The Bronchos maintained a 12-point cushion at halftime (40-28) and were up 50-36 early in the second half when Robinson drilled a 3-pointer, Mason a  15-foot jumper and Mayes a short turnaround shot to push the lead to 21 (57-36) with 11:27 left to play.

UCO coasted in from there in winning for the seventh time in 11 road games.

The Bronchos move on to Emporia, Kan. Saturday to take on No. 9-ranked Emporia State at 1:30 p.m.
