Bronchos Shoot Past NSU

Box Score

EDMOND (Feb. 5) –
Chelsi Dennis drained a pair of long-range shots to help break the game open and Central Oklahoma finally found its shooting touch in a much-needed 62-47 triumph over intrastate rival Northeastern State Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos had struggled from 3-point territory in dropping five straight games, but  it was second-half success from downtown that paved the way to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association victory.

UCO made 6-of-11 shots (54.5 percent) from beyond the arc while shooting a sizzling 65.2 percent (15-of-23) overall in the final 20 minutes and the Bronchos really got it going in the last 8:23.

Coach Guy Hardaker's crew hit nine of its last 13 field goal tries – including 3-of-5 from 3-point land – during that game-ending stretch to turn a precarious two-point lead into the final 15-point margin.

"That was a big win for us and we really needed it," Hardaker said. "We didn't make a lot of shots in the first half, but we were getting good looks and they finally started going in.  Our girls kept battling and it paid off for us."

UCO never trailed and appeared in control after taking a 13-point lead (33-20) early in the second half, but the RiverHawks battled back and were within two at 39-37 with 8:35 left to play.

The Bronchos responded with 12 unanswered points to finally take control for good, getting back-to-back layups from Kylie Mays and Jordan Ward to start the run  before Dennis splashed through a trey from the wing to make it 46-37 at the 7:19 mark.

Chelsea Robinson added a short jumper and Dennis capped the spurt with another 3-pointer to give UCO a commanding 51-37 lead with 4:41 remaining.

Marley Anderson added another trey at 2:55 to push the cushion to 17 (56-39) and end any doubt on the outcome.

UCO improved to 14-8 on the season and 7-6 in the league as eight players scored.

Robinson led the way with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field while adding seven assists, four rebounds and two steals.  Olivia Mason had 14 points and six boards as the only other player in double figures.

Dennis finished 3-of-5 from long range in chipping in nine points, with Mayes contributing six points and seven rebounds.

Julia Mason had five of her six points in the first three minutes to stake the Bronchos to a 7-0 lead and UCO led by as many as 11 (18-7) before settling for a 23-16 halftime advantage.

The Bronchos are back in action Saturday, hosting conference rival and No. 10-ranked Pittsburg State at 1:30 p.m.
