UCO Romps Over RiverHawks

Box Score

EDMOND (Feb. 5) – Reggie Sloan's 3-point barrage to end the first half put Central Oklahoma firmly in control and the Bronchos went on to clobber intrastate rival Northeastern State 77-49 Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

Sloan drilled three long-range bombs in the final 3:12 as UCO used a 13-0 run to turn a five-point lead into a commanding 18-point halftime cushion and the RiverHawks had no answer in the final 20 minutes.

The Bronchos ended up with more 3-point baskets (14) than two-point ones (12) and shot 42.4 percent (14-of-33) from beyond the arc in winning their fourth straight from NSU.

UCO improved to 14-8 on the season and 7-6 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.  The Bronchos are home again Saturday to host league rival Pittsburg State at 3:30 p.m.

"We did a great job moving the ball around,  finding the open man and then knocking down some shots," head coach Terry Evans said.  "That's the way we're capable of shooting the ball and I thought we also played well defensively."

Sloan led a balanced attack with 16 points while hitting 4-of-7 long-distance attempts.  Seth Heckart was 5-of-9 from 3-point land in a 15-point, five-rebound, four-assist outing and Philip Brown added 12 points.

Jacob Strassle chipped in seven points, four rebounds and two assists in a rare start while also drawing three charges as UCO forced 20 turnovers in addition to holding the RiverHawks to 34.0-percent shooting from the field.  It was the fewest points the Bronchos had allowed since a 71-45 win over Southeastern Oklahoma during the 2010-11 season.

UCO never trailed, taking a 5-0 lead behind Strassle's short jumper and 3-pointer from the corner.

NSU was within 8-7 before two Heckart treys and two Brown layups pushed the lead to 18-8, though the RiverHawks came back with five unanswered points to make it 18-13.

That's when the Bronchos seized control with the half-ending 13-0 scoring spurt.

Brown started it with a layup off a Strassle assist, Sloan swished through back-to-back 3-pointers and Trai Jordan added an offensive put-back before another Sloan long-range dagger gave UCO a big 31-13 halftime lead.

Brown then scored six straight points to open the second half in upping the advantage to 37-13 and NSU never got closer than 17 the rest of the way.
