Upset Bid Falls Short

EDMOND (Feb. 26) – Missed opportunities down the stretch prevented Central Oklahoma from pulling off a monumental upset Thursday night at Hamilton Field House as the Bronchos fell to No. 4-ranked Fort Hays State 56-55.

Neither team scored in the last 2:26 after Julia Mason's layup made it 56-55, with the Bronchos missing three free throws and committing two turnovers the rest of the way.

The Tigers weren't much better during that stretch with two missed field goals, two turnovers and two bricked foul shots, both of those coming in the final six seconds.

FHSU managed to rebound the first miss before getting fouled again at 0:04 and J. Mason pulled in the second errant attempt, but she wasn't able to get off a final desperation shot before time expired.

"We had a chance at the end and just couldn't pull it off," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We put ourselves in a big hole with the way we played in the first half and I was proud of how hard we fought.  It was a tough, physical game and we came up a little short."

J. Mason led the Bronchos with 17 points, while Chelsea Robinson had 12 points and nine rebounds.  UCO had only eight turnovers, but shot just 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the line and 29.8 percent (17-of-57) from the field.

The Bronchos, now 15-12 overall and 8-10 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, host Nebraska-Kearney at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the regular season final.  FHSU, which has already clinched the regular season league title, improved to 25-2 and 17-1.

The Bronchos trailed 28-14 at intermission after shooting a mere 15.2 percent (5-of-33) in the first 20 minutes, but Chelsi Dennis drilled two 3-pointers and McKenzie Solberg swished three free throws to cut the deficit to 30-23 three minutes into the second half.

A Hayley Bryan trey pulled UCO within four at 38-34 with 13:41 left to play and it was a one-point game (43-42) at 8:27 following two Olivia Mason free throws.

FHSU was up 53-48 when Jordan Ward drove in for a tough layup in traffic and Solberg splashed through a 3-pointer from the corner to tie it at 53-all with 3:26 remaining.

A three-point play put the Tigers up 56-53 before J. Mason's layup made it 56-55 at the 2:26 mark, but neither team would score again as FHSU held on.
