Bronchos Clobber UNK

EDMOND (Feb. 28) – Julia Mason and Chelsea Robinson scored 17 points apiece and keyed a first-half surge that gave Central Oklahoma a lead it would never relinquish in a 79-58 romp over Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos improved to 16-12 in the regular season finale and tied for sixth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association standings at 9-10.  UCO finished as the sixth seed and will turn around to host the Lopers again Tuesday in the first round of the MIAA Post-season Tournament at 7 p.m.

"That was a big win for us and we're happy to open the conference tournament at home," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We sputtered early, but made some things happen with our defense and got great contributions from a lot of different players."

The Bronchos had 14 steals – getting three apiece from J. Mason, Robinson and Marley Anderson – and blocked a season-high eight shots as Kylie Mayes (three), J. Mason (two) and Ashley Stephens (two) all had multiple rejections.

J. Mason was 6-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line, while Robinson made 6-of-9 shots and 4-of-5 foul shots in their 17-point outings.  Mayes finished with 10 points, McKenzie Solberg hit three 3-pointers in scoring nine points and Hayley Bryan chipped in eight points and five rebounds.

UCO struggled early and was down 19-16 12 minutes into the game before J. Mason had five points and Robinson four during a 13-2 run that put the Bronchos on top to stay 29-21 at the 4:01 mark.

It was a 31-27 lead at halftime and the Lopers were still close at 47-41 before Bryan drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key to ignite an 11-1 spurt that broke the game open.

Jordan Ward hit a 10-foot jumper, Solberg added a corner trey and Bryan converted an old-fashioned three-point play to push the advantage to 58-42 with 8:33 remaining and UNK never got closer than 14 the rest of the way.
