Cold-shooting Bronchos Fall To NSU

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (Feb. 21) – Central Oklahoma nearly overcame a rough shooting outing, but came up short in a 62-54 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association loss to Northeastern State here Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos were without leading 3-point shooter Olivia Mason -- who suffered a concussion earlier this week in practice – and made just 2-of-21 attempts (9.5 percent) from beyond the arc while shooting just 29.8 percent (17-of-57) overall.

Despite the shooting woes, UCO trailed just 54-52 with 1:13 to play before missing three straight shots as the RiverHawks clinched the win at the free throw line.

"We just didn't make any shots," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "Obviously not having Olivia hurt us, but we can't use that as an excuse.  It was a disappointing loss."

The Bronchos fell to 15-11 on the season and 8-9 in the league, while NSU improved to 11-13 and 7-10.  UCO finishes the regular season with home games against Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney next week, needing one win to secure a home game in the first round of the MIAA Post-season Tournament.

Julia Mason led the Bronchos with 23 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots, hitting 7-of-13 shots and 8-of-10 free throws.  Chelsea Robinson was the only other player in double figures with 13 points while adding six rebounds and three steals.

UCO led only once, at 10-9 following a three-point play by Chelsi Dennis nine minutes into the game, and trailed by as many as 13 in the opening half before going into intermission facing a 31-21 deficit.

NSU had an 11-point lead at 41-30 with 14:28 left when the Bronchos rallied, going on a 10-0 run to pull within one.

Ashley Stephens started that spurt with a layup, J. Mason scored five straight points, Robinson made one of two free throws and Marley Anderson hit two foul shots to make it 41-40 at the 10:03 mark.

McKenzie Solberg followed an NSU 3-pointer with one of her own to keep the Bronchos within one at 44-43, but the RiverHawks surged ahead by eight (54-46) with 2:48 remaining.

UCO rallied again with six unanswered point points, capped by back-to-back Robinson layups that made it 54-52 with 1:13 left, but the Bronchos went cold again and NSU held on.
