UCO Holds Off RiverHawks

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (Feb. 21) – Jacob Strassle scored six points during an early-game 14-2 run that put Central Oklahoma in front and the Bronchos went on to topple Northeastern State 63-57 here Saturday afternoon.

The RiverHawks hit two 3-pointers in taking a quick 6-0 lead before Strassle sparked the scoring spurt that put UCO on top 14-8 and the Bronchos never trailed again in winning for the fifth straight time over their intrastate rivals.

UCO improved to 17-9 on the season and 10-7 in league play with its fourth win in the last five games.

"It wasn't pretty, but winning on the road is always tough," head coach Terry Evans said.  "We got good contributions from a lot of different players and got a win we needed to have."

Mahlon Jones led a balanced attack with 14 points, hitting 5-of-7 shots with three 3-pointers.  Philip Brown had his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Cal Andrews chipped in 13 points and eight boards.

Strassle had six of his seven points during the early flurry, hitting a 3-pointer to put the Bronchos on top 8-6 and then following an NSU layup with a conventional three-point play that made it 11-8.

Trai Jordan made a layup with 14:27 left in the half and hit one of two free throws at 13:36 to push UCO's lead to 14-8.

The largest lead was eight at 23-15 on two Brown free throws at 8:33, but the RiverHawks came back to get within one at 30-29 before Andrews' last-second tip-in gave UCO a 32-29 halftime advantage.

Jones gave the Bronchos a double-digit lead at 48-38 midway through the second half with a layup and it was a 12-point cushion (53-41) on an Andrews layup at the 8:40 mark.

NSU didn't go away and rallied to within three at 58-55 with 30 seconds left, but Brown made two foul shots at 0:28 and Andrews rejected the RiverHawks' next shot to clinch the win.

UCO finishes the regular season with two home games next week, hosting Fort Hays State Thursday and Nebraska-Kearney Saturday.
