Washburn Tops Bronchos

Box Score

TOPEKA, Kan. (Feb. 12) –
Washburn used superior bench play to hand Central Oklahoma a 71-65 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback here Thursday night.

The Bronchos had a brief two-game winning streak snapped after a 38-12 scoring advantage by WU's reserves gave the Ichabods a home-and-home sweep in dropping UCO to 15-9 on the season and 8-6 in the league.

Seth Heckart made four 3-pointers in scoring 16 points to lead a balanced attack by the Bronchos.  Philip Brown added 13 points and six rebounds, while Mahlon Jones had 12 points.

UCO trailed 35-31 at halftime, but rallied to take a 52-51 lead with 7:27 remaining when Jones capped a 6-0 run with a 3-pointer.  Jarred Bairstow answered a Washburn trey with one of his own at 6:08 to keep the Bronchos up by one and it was tied 57-all on a Brown layup with 4:21 left.

The Ichabods scored the next four points to move in front for good 61-57 at the 3:28 mark, though two Heckart free throws had UCO within 61-59 at 3:10.

Two straight buckets gave WU a 65-59 lead and the Bronchos couldn't answer back in dropping their fourth straight road game.

UCO goes to Emporia, Kan. Saturday to face Emporia State at 3:30 p.m.
