UCO Falls To Late Rally

PITTSBURG, Kan. (Dec. 5) – Pittsburg State outscored Central Oklahoma 8-2 down the stretch to hand the Bronchos a tough 74-71 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback here Saturday afternoon.

UCO led by 13 at halftime and was up three at 69-66 after Kendahl Amerson hit a 3-pointer with 1:53 left to play.  A turnover and missed shot helped the Gorillas score six unanswered points in taking a 72-69 lead with 17 seconds remaining.

Trai Jordan made two free throws at 0:08 to pull the Bronchos within 72-71, but PSU answered with two foul shots of its own at 0:06 to make it 74-71 and Garen Wright's tying 3-point try at the buzzer was off the mark.

It was the third straight loss for UCO, which fell to 4-4 on the season and 0-2 in the league.  The Gorillas improved to 7-1 and 2-0.

"We didn't play good enough defense in the second half and that was the difference," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "We had some chances late in the game, but couldn't make any shots."

Amerson made four treys in a team-high 16-point outing, while Cornell Neal added 15 points, Seth Heckart 12 and Jordan 11 along with three blocked shots.

UCO trailed 11-10 before going on a 11-2 run to move in front 21-13 on a Jordan layup and the Bronchos pushed the lead to 10 (33-23) on a Neal free throw with 1:11 left in the half.

Two more Neal free throws at 0:42 had UCO on top 36-25 and the junior guard made it 38-25 at the break with a jumper two seconds ahead of the buzzer.

The lead was still double digits at 41-31 after a Jarred Bairstow bucket early in the second half, but the Gorillas scored six straight points to get back in it and pulled even at 45-all.

There were eight ties the rest of the way, the last one at 69 before PSU took its final lead.

The Bronchos return to conference action next Saturday at Lincoln.
