Bronchos Down UNK In MIAA Tourney

EDMOND (Nov. 4) – Surging Central Oklahoma answered an early Nebraska-Kearney goal with three unanswered scores and went on to a 3-1 victory in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Post-season Tournament Wednesday at Tom Thompson Field.

It was the fifth straight win for the Bronchos, who improved to 12-5-2 on the season in advancing to Friday's semifinals against intrastate rival Northeastern State.

The final two rounds will be hosted by regular season champion Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo.  The Jennies take on Fort Hays State at 4 p.m. and UCO plays the RiverHawks at 7 p.m. in Friday's semifinals, with the two winners meeting for the tournament title Sunday at 1 p.m.

Katie Killion continued her late-season dominance with two goals and defensive star Quinn Tookey added her first score of the year to spark UCO past the Lopers, who blanked the Bronchos 1-0 in the regular season.

"We got off to a slow start and gave up the early goal, but I think we played pretty solid defense after that," head coach Mike Cook said.  "We did a good job capitalizing on our chances and we're happy to be moving on."

UNK scored at the 8:45 mark to take the early lead, with Killion tying it 10 minutes later on a shot from close range off a pass from Ashley McDaniel.

Tookey put UCO on top to stay in the 36th minute when she dribbled downfield and rifled in a shot from 10 yards out after getting a return pass from Victoria Neblett.

Killion made it 3-1 nine minutes into the second half with her 10th goal of the season, this one coming on a 20-footer to the left side of the net after getting a nice lead pass from Morgan Cherry.

Tookey once again spearheaded UCO's defensive efforts that limited the Lopers to eight shots, with McDaniel, Courtney Cox and Casey Herndon also playing a key role.

Elle Stover went the distance in goal for the Bronchos, making four saves.
