Bronchos Fall In MIAA Finals

EDMOND (Nov. 21) – A brilliant performance by Barbara Jackson wasn't enough for Central Oklahoma in the finals of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Post-season Tournament Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

Jackson clubbed a career-high 33 kills – the fifth-best single-match total in school history – but the No. 14-ranked Bronchos fell to Central Missouri in a hard-fought four-set battle that saw 38 ties and 18 lead changes.

The No. 13-rated Jennies won a 27-25 third-set barnburner after the two teams split the first two and then went on to close out the match to claim a 22-25, 25-20, 27-25, 25-18 victory and earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division II national tournament.

UCM improved to 30-4 with its 10th straight win, while the Bronchos fell to 30-4 in having a 20-match home winning streak ended.  UCO is expected to receive an at-large berth into the Division II tournament when the 64-team field is announced Monday night.

"I was really proud of the way we fought today, but we came up a little short," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It was a great match and Central Missouri just made a few more plays than us, so hats off to them."

Jackson was a terror throughout the match and finished with a sizzling .413 hitting percentage in collecting her 33 kills in 75 attacks with just two errors while adding 14 digs.

Elizabeth Boyd added eight kills off the bench and Jordan Spence had seven kills with five assisted blocks.  The Bronchos also got 52 assists and 16 digs from Katy Davis, 34 digs from Whitney Gifford and 13 from Bonnie Vernon.

UCO used a 5-1 run to break away from an 7-7 tie to take a 12-8 lead in the first set before the Jennies rallied to go ahead 18-17.  It was tied at 19 before back-to-back kills by Jackson and Allison Barr put the Bronchos in front to stay.

Central Missouri scored three unanswered points in snapping a 13-13 stalemate in the second set and never trailed again in tying the match.

The decisive third set saw 16 ties and five lead changes, with UCO taking a 13-9 lead before the Jennies rallied to go up 17-16.  It was tied at 17, 18, 19, 20, 22 and 23 before a Boyd kill gave the Bronchos a 24-23 lead with a chance to serve for the set.

UCM tied it at 24 before Spence's slam dunk at the net made it 25-24, but the Jennies scored the next three points to pull out the big win.

UCO had to battle from behind after falling behind early in the fourth set and was never able to catch up despite 13 kills in 26 attacks by Jackson.
