Spence Sparks Streaking Bronchos

JOPLIN, Mo. (Oct. 9) – Jordan Spence had a season-high 14 kills and No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma kept rolling with a sweep of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Missouri Southern here Friday night.

The Bronchos hit a sizzling .371 as a team with 49 kills and just 13 errors in 97 attacks in cruising to a 25-19, 25-18, 25-14 rout for their 11th straight win.  UCO improved to 17-1 on the season and a league-best 6-0 heading into a Saturday afternoon contest at Southwest Baptist.

"We played pretty well overall," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "Jordan came out strong to start the match and once again we got great contributions from a lot of different players."

Spence finished with a .417 hitting percentage as the freshman middle blocker collected her 14 kills in just 24 attacks with four errors.

Rookie Taylor Bevis hit .333 with 11 kills and four errors in 21 attempts, while senior All-American Barbara Jackson and freshman Deborah Ijeoma Njenje had nine kills apiece while hitting .368 and .412, respectively.

The Bronchos also got 46 assists and two assisted blocks from setter Katy Davis and libero Whitney Gifford once again paced the defense with 21 digs.

The first set was tied early before UCO took the lead for good at 10-7 on three straight Spence kills.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set as Bevis had a kill and Jackson a service ace, with Bevis adding two more kills in helping that lead grow to 10-2 en route to another easy win.

Missouri Southern led 3-1 early in the third set, but Bevis had two kills in a 6-1 run that put UCO in front to stay and the Bronchos pulled away from there en route to closing out the match.
