Bronchos Rally Past Missouri Southern

Box Score

JOPLIN, Mo. (Jan. 8) –
Marley Anderson scored four points and made two other big plays during a one-minute span late in the game to spark Central Oklahoma to a come-from-behind 54-51 triumph over Missouri Southern here Thursday night.

The Bronchos overcame a 13-point second-half deficit in winning for the 10th time in 11 outings, improving to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.  UCO, which went 12-16 last year, moves on to Bolivar, Mo. Saturday to take on Southwest Baptist at 1:30 p.m.

"We didn't play very well the first 25 minutes or so and put ourselves in a bad position, but the girls didn't panic and we came out with a huge road win," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We made a lot of big plays down the stretch, both offensively and defensively."

UCO was down 47-43 when Anderson scored four straight points to pull the Bronchos even at 47-all, hitting one of two free throws at the 2:30 mark and converting a three-point play 30 seconds later.

The sophomore guard made a steal that led to Jordan Ward's layup at 1:34 to give UCO a 49-47 lead and then rebounded a MSSU miss to give the Bronchos another possession.

Julia Mason drilled a 3-pointer off a Ward assist at 0:32 to make it 52-47 and the Lions answered with a trey at 0:13 remaining to get within 52-50.  MSSU immediately fouled, but McKenzie Solberg – who entered the game 28-of-29 from the free throw line – calmly swished both charity tosses to push the lead to 54-50.

The Lions made one free throw with one second left to arrange the final margin.

Kylie Mayes scored nine of her team-high 14 points in the second half, while Julia Mason added 13 points and Solberg nine.

UCO made its first two shots of the game to take a quick 4-0 lead, but the Lions rebounded with seven unanswered points and led by as many as seven before settling for a 24-19 halftime advantage.

The Bronchos missed their first five shots of the second half in falling behind 30-19 and the deficit was 13 (36-23) with 15:39 remaining.

UCO chipped away at the lead and got within 45-43 on Mayes' first 3-pointer of the season with 4:01 left to play.  Missouri Southern made two free throws at 2:55 to go up 47-43 before Anderson's heroics sparked the late rally.
