UCO Rolls To Fifth Straight Win

Box Score

BOLIVAR, Mo. (Jan. 10) –
Olivia Mason scored a career-high 22 points and sparked a first-half surge that put Central Oklahoma in the lead as the streaking Bronchos subdued Southwest Baptist 72-65 here Saturday afternoon.

It was the fifth straight win and 11th in 12 outings for UCO, which improved to 13-3 overall in surpassing its win total of last season (12-16) and 6-1 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Mason hit back-to-back 3-pointers to key an 11-2 first-half run that put the Bronchos in front to stay and UCO led by double digits most of the second half.

"We didn't make a lot of mistakes and played pretty well overall," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "It's tough to win on the road in this league, so I was pleased with how we came out and took care of business today."

Mason made 7-of-13 shots with four 3-pointers and all four free throws in her 22-point outing, while Chelsea Robinson hit 8-of-11 foul shots in adding 19 points and four rebounds.  Mason and Robinson combined for 28 of UCO's 39 second-half points.

The Bronchos also got nine points, six rebounds and four assists from Jordan Ward, with McKenzie Solberg chipping in seven points, a team-high seven rebounds and two steals.

The Bearcats 10-6 after the first seven minutes before Mason ignited the 11-2 run that turned the game around.  Mason's two treys gave UCO a lead it would never relinquish and Solberg added a 3-pointer as the Bronchos went on top 17-12 with 9:15 left in the half.

The lead grew to nine (33-24) by intermission and UCO opened the second half with seven unanswered points behind a Mason layup, Robinson 3-pointer and Ward bucket in pushing the cushion to 16 at 40-24.

SBU clawed back to within seven (44-37) with 11:36 left to play, but Mason scored five straight points to make it a 12-point advantage at 49-37 and the Bronchos weren't threatened again.

UCO increased its lead to 16 again at 67-51 with 2:12 left before the Bearcats unleashed a flurry of 3-pointers down the stretch to get within the final margin.

The Bronchos continue a four-game conference road swing next week, going to Fort Hays State Thursday and Nebraska-Kearney Saturday.
