Bronchos Fall Short Against UNK

Box Score

KEARNEY, Neb. (Jan. 17) –
A spirited late-game rally fell short for Central Oklahoma here Saturday night as the Bronchos dropped a tough 65-62 decision to Nebraska-Kearney.

UCO never led, but overcame an 11-point second-half deficit to pull even at 62-all with 41 seconds left.  The Lopers broke that deadlock with a 3-pointer at 0:20 and Julia Mason's tying trey at the buzzer was off the mark.

It was the second straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association loss for the Bronchos, who fell to 13-5 overall and 6-3 in the conference.

"We got off to a slow start again and just didn't shoot the ball very well," said head coach Guy Hardaker.  "I thought we fought hard and gave ourselves a chance at the end of the game, but we just didn't get it done."

UCO made just 21-of-61 shots (34.4 percent) from the field, including only 5-of-26 attempts (19.2 percent) from beyond the arc.

Olivia Mason led the Bronchos with 15 points and five rebounds as the only player in double figures.  J. Mason and Kylie Mayes had eight points apiece, while McKenzie Solberg added seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.

UCO trailed 35-31 at halftime and fell behind 46-35 six minutes into the second half.  It was still a nine-point deficit at 56-47 with 6:08 left to play when the Bronchos went on a 9-3 run to get close.

O. Mason had five of those points and Chelsea Robinson's layup off a UNK turnover had UCO within 59-58 at the 1:49 mark.  The Lopers hit a 3-pointer to push their lead to 62-58, but Robinson made a layup at 1:25 and then tied it with two free throws at 0:41.

UNK regained the lead with another trey at 0:20 and the Bronchos promptly turned the ball over, but the Lopers missed two free throws with nine seconds left.

Ward was fouled at 0:03 and missed both foul shots, with J. Mason rebounding the second miss.  UCO called timeout to set up a final play and J. Mason's last-ditch long-range shot at a tie was off the mark.

The Bronchos never led after missing their first six shots of the game in falling behind 9-0.  UCO trailed by as many as 11 before pulling to within four (35-31) by intermission on Mayes' layup with four seconds left.

The Bronchos return home Thursday to continue MIAA play against Washburn.  Game-time at Hamilton Field House is 5:30 p.m.
