Box Score

EDMOND (Jan. 22) –
There appeared to be a lid on the basket every time Central Oklahoma put a shot Thursday night against Washburn at Hamilton Field House, whether it was long-range attempt or a point-blank layup.

The Bronchos missed their first 22 tries from 3-point territory, made only 1-of-27 shots during one 16-minute stretch and ended up shooting a dismal – not to mention season-low -- 24.2 percent (16-of-66) overall.

The end result was the first home loss of the season for UCO, which dropped a 55-50 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association decision to the Ichabods.

The Bronchos actually had a 25-22 halftime led despite making only 8-of-31 shots (25.8 percent), but the shooting touch was even worse in the final 20 minutes when UCO hit 8-of-35 attempts (22.9 percent) as Washburn rallied for the win.

"We just could not buy a bucket," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "I don't know if I've ever seen anything like it.  We got some good looks and had a bunch of 'em go in and out, but the bottom line is we just didn't make enough shots."

Despite hitting a mere 2-of-29 attempts (6.9 percent) from beyond the arc the Bronchos still had a chance at the end, thanks to a defense that made 12 steals while forcing 24 turnovers.

Olivia Mason's 3-pointer with 11 seconds left pulled UCO within 52-49, with the Ichabods making one of two free throws at 0:09 to go up 53-49.

Mason was fouled shooting another trey with two seconds left and missed the first foul shot before making the second.  She  intentionally missing the third, but the Bronchos couldn't corral the rebound and WU made two more free throws at 0:01 to arrange the final margin.

Kylie Mayes led UCO with 15 points and six rebounds, hitting 5-of-11 shots as the only Broncho to shot better than 35 percent from the field.  O. Mason had 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals, with Julia Mason chipping in eight points.

The Bronchos got off to a hot start, making four of their first five shots – two each by Mayes and O. Mason – in jumping out to a quick 9-2 lead.

Free throws and steals kept UCO in front and the lead peaked at 12 (22-10) on Chelsea Robinson's layup with 6:04 left in the half.

The Bronchos would make just one field goal over the next 16 minutes to end the first half and start the second as WU went on a 26-5 run to surge in front 36-27 and UCO could never catch up.

It was the third straight loss for the Bronchos, who fell to 13-6 on the season and 6-4 in the league.  UCO is home again Saturday to host No. 2-ranked Emporia State at 1:30 p.m.
