Slow Start Dooms Bronchos

Box Score

HAYS, Kan. (Jan. 15) –
Fort Hays State closed the game with a 9-2 run over the final four minutes to stave off Central Oklahoma 60-52 here Thursday night.

The Bronchos were forced to battle for behind all night after falling into a 13-point hole nine minutes into the game and UCO took a series of slim leads in the final 12 minutes before the Tigers prevailed with their late surge.

It was the 14th straight win for FHSU, which improved to 15-1 overall and 8-0 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.  The Bronchos had a five-game winning streak snapped in falling to 13-4 and 6-2.

"We couldn't buy a bucket to start the game and were fighting uphill the rest of the way," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "I was proud of the way we stayed in there and fought, but it took a lot out of us and we kind of ran out of energy at the end against a really good team."

Kylie Mayes was the lone scorer in double figures for UCO as the senior forward hit 8-of-18 shots and 3-of-4 free throws in a 20-point outing while adding five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots before fouling out late in the game.

Chelsi Dennis chipped in a season-high nine points, with Julia Mason and Chelsea Robinson adding eight each.  Leading scorer Olivia Mason was limited to two points, though she did pull down a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Bronchos trailed 29-20 at halftime after  making just 8-of-28 shots (28.6 percent) in the first 20 minutes.

It was a 10-point deficit at 34-24 two minutes into the second half before McKenzie Solberg made three free throws and Mayes two in a 5-0 run that ignited UCO's comeback.

The Bronchos took their first lead of the game at 39-38 on Dennis' 3-pointer with 11:57 remaining and UCO was up 41-38 when J. Mason made two foul shots at the 11:17 mark.

Solberg's layup with 9:03 left gave the Bronchos another three-point lead (45-42), but the Tigers went on a 7-1 spurt to move in front to stay 49-46.

The Bronchos trailed just 51-50 after Robinson hit a short jumper with 4:31 remaining, but UCO got only a layup from Mayes the rest of the way as FHSU closed out the win.

Central made just one of its first 13 shots of the game – missing seven layups – in falling behind 15-2 and trailed by double digits most of the opening half before getting within nine (29-20) by intermission on J. Mason's late bucket.

The Bronchos wrap up a four-game road swing Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. contest at Nebraska-Kearney.
