Mayes Leads UCO Past Tigers

Box Score

EDMOND (Dec. 31) --
Kylie Mayes scored eight of her career-high 20 points in the final 5:33 to keep Central Oklahoma in front as the Bronchos turned back intrastate rival East Central 60-51 Wednesday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO led most of the way in winning for the eighth time in nine outings, but never put the pesky Tigers away until Olivia Mason's two free throws with 21 seconds gave the Bronchos their final nine-point cushion.

It was the first game in 11 days for UCO, which improved to 10-3 with its final non-conference game of the season.  The Bronchos resume Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Saturday, hosting Northwest Missouri at 1:30 p.m.

"It was a tough game like we knew it would be," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "Coming off a long break we weren't as sharp as we need to be, but Kylie made some big buckets and we got some key stops on defense late in the game."

Mayes was the catalyst, making 8-of-12 field goals and 4-of-6 free throws in her 20-point performance while also hauling in a career-best 10 rebounds and blocking one shot.

Chelsea Robinson chipped in nine points and seven rebounds, with O. Mason adding nine points, five boards and two blocks for the Bronchos, who outrebounded ECU 43-31 to make up for 37.8-percent shooting from the field.

UCO led 28-25 at halftime and was up 47-46 late in the contest when Mayes took over.

The 6-foot-1 senior forward made two foul shots at 5:33 to push the lead to three and canned two more charity tosses at 4:07 to give the Bronchos a six-point lead (54-48).  UCO forced the Tigers to throw the ball away on the other end and Mayes converted a follow shot at 3:34 to make it 56-48.

An ECU 3-pointer cut the lead to 56-51 with 3:13 remaining and neither team scored again until Mayes made another follow shot at 1:37 to boost the advantage to 58-51.  Mayes rebounded two Tiger misses in the final minute before O. Mason's free throws finally sealed the deal.

ECU led 5-4 early before Mayes and Robinson scored four points apiece in a 10-2 run that put the Bronchos on top 14-7 at the 14:26 mark.  UCO's first-half lead peaked at nine (28-19) on two Robinson free throws with 3:58 left before the Tigers scored the final six points to get within three at intermission.

Back-to-back layups by Mayes had the Bronchos back in front by seven (32-25) early in the second half, but ECU rallied to take a 37-35 lead with 11:21 left to play.

UCO responded with a 9-2 spurt, moving in front for good at 44-39 on McKenzie Solberg's 3-pointer with 9:16 remaining.
