Bronchos Stampede Past Missouri Western

Box Score

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (Dec. 20) –
Kylie Mayes scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures as Central Oklahoma overwhelmed Missouri Western 79-64 here Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos led for all but 28 seconds  of the game in winning for the seventh time in eight outings, improving to 9-3 on the season and 3-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

Mayes was 5-of-11 from the field and perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line in her 16-point outing while adding five rebounds and two assists.

Marley Anderson was 7-of-8 from the charity stripe in scoring 14 points, with Julia Mason chipping in 13 points, a game-high seven rebounds and two blocks shots and Olivia Mason 12 points and three steals.

The Bronchos had assists on 17 of 23 baskets in shooting a solid 46.0 percent (23-of-50) from the field and made 26-of-30 free throws (86.7 percent).

"I was proud of the way we bounced back after a tough loss the other night," said head coach Guy Hardaker, whose team dropped a 63-58 decision at Central Missouri Thursday after owning a 14-point first-half lead.  "We really did a nice job running our offense and continue to get contributions from a lot of players."

UCO trailed only once, at 3-2 just over a minute into the game.  J. Mason tied it by making one of two free throws and Mayes' layup off a feed from Jordan Ward put the Bronchos on top to stay 5-3 barely two minutes in.

McKenzie Solberg's 3-pointer had UCO on top 16-9, but the Griffons stayed close and were within 20-19 with 8:43 left in the half when the Bronchos went on an 11-3 run to open up some breathing room.

O. Mason had five of those points, with her 3-pointer at the 4:39 mark pushing the lead to 31-22, and an Anderson trey had UCO on top 38-24 with 25 seconds left.

MWSU hit a last-second 3-pointer to make it 38-27 at the break and the Griffons closed to within seven (40-33) four minutes into the second half before the Bronchos pulled away for good.

Chelsea Robinson scored six points in a 10-0 spurt that made it 50-33 with 13:26 remaining and it became a 20-point cushion at 55-36 on a Hayley Bryan foul shot at 11:31.

UCO cruised the rest of the way to secure the conference road win and is off until hosting intrastate rival East Central at 1:30 p.m. New Year's Eve.
