UCO Clobbers Bulldogs

Box Score

WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Nov. 25) –
Kylie Mayes scored 16 of her career-high 19 points in the first half and Central Oklahoma put the defensive clamps on Southwestern Oklahoma en route to a 74-54 drubbing here Tuesday night.

It was the second straight win for the Bronchos, who ran an aggressive zone defense that frustrated the Bulldogs all night.  SWOSU fired up 40 3-pointers in the contest, making only nine, and scored just 37 points in the first 32 minutes.

Mayes was unstoppable in the first half in making all eight shot attempts and scored 12 straight points during one stretch.  The 6-foot-2 senior finished 9-of-11 from the field while adding seven rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal.

Hayley Bryan was almost as effective inside, making 6-of-10 shots and 3-of-4 free throws in a career-best 16-point outing to go along with seven rebounds.

"We played really well, especially on the defensive end with the way we stayed active," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "They didn't have anybody who could handle Kylie and Hayley inside and we did a good job getting them the ball in the right position."

UCO trailed 8-4 early before coming back to move in front to stay at 13-12 on Mayes' turnaround jumper from 10 feet at the 14:55 mark and Bryan scored five consecutive points to help the Bronchos build a 25-16 advantage at 10:08.

It was an eight-point lead (33-25) when Mayes hit three straight short jumpers in the paint to ignite a 12-0 run that Olivia Mason ended with a 3-pointer from the wing to bump the cushion to 20 (45-25) with 1:11 left in the half.

The Bulldogs scored the final four points to get within 45-29 at intermission and was still within 15 at 52-37 when UCO put the game away for good with another 12-0 spurt.

O. Mason started it with another trey from the wing off a pass from Marley Anderson, who followed with a driving layup.  Bryan then scored the next seven points, burying a long 3-pointer before making back-to-back layups.

That made it 27-point bulge at 64-37 with 8:15 left to play and Hardaker emptied his bench two minutes later as the Bronchos coasted in.

UCO, now 4-2 on the season, returns home Saturday to host Arkansas-Fort Smith at 1:30 p.m.
