Stars Rally Past UCO

Box Score

EDMOND (Nov. 22) –
A late-game cold spell resulted in a 20-point turnaround and ended up in Central Oklahoma's first loss of the season Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos had an eight-point lead (89-81) over Oklahoma City with 7:35 left to play, but the Stars used a 20-1 run to surge in front and went on to a 108-97 victory.

It was UCO's first loss in four games and ended a seven-game home winning streak.  The Bronchos (3-1) are back home Monday to host Southwestern Christian at 7 p.m.

UCO led by as many as 13 in the second half and still had that eight-point advantage at 89-81 when the game turned.

The Bronchos missed three of four free throws and all three field goal tries while also committing three turnovers over the next seven minutes as OCU went on its 20-1 spurt to take a stunning 101-90 lead with 3:15 remaining.

UCO, which went nearly six minutes down the stretch without a field goal, never got closer than eight the rest of the way.

The Bronchos shot just 33.3 percent (12-of-36) in the second half -- including 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from 3-point range – and hit only 11-of-24 free throws (45.8 percent).

OCU, meanwhile, was 20-of-33 (60.6 percent) from the field in the final 20 minutes in outscoring UCO 59-37.

Seven players scored in double figures for the Bronchos, with Garen Wright's 21 leading the way.  Trai Jordan had 12 points, six steals and two blocked shots.

UCO also 11 points apiece from Cal Andrews and Jarred Bairstow, while Seth Heckart, Mahlon Jones and Jacob Strassle scored 10 each.

Strassle scored eight points in the final 1:36 of the first half, including a desperation 30-foot bomb at the buzzer that gave the Bronchos a 60-50 halftime cushion.

The lead peaked at 13 (67-54) with 17:59 left on Andrews' 3-pointer and it was still 12 at 77-65 when Jones drove in for a fast-break layup at the 12:24 mark.

The Stars cut the lead to four (82-78) at 9:23, but UCO was back up by eight at 89-81 after another Jones layup.

And then everything fell apart for the Bronchos.
