UCO Edges Lions On Late Goal

Box Score

EDMOND (Nov. 2) –
Paige Matacchiera finally cashed in on one of Central Oklahoman's many scoring chances in the 81st minute to lift the Bronchos to a 1-0 victory over Missouri Southern Sunday afternoon at breezy Tom Thompson Field.

UCO overwhelmed the Lions from the outset and held an uncanny 30-4 advantage in shots, yet the outcome was still in doubt until Matacchiera finally broke through with less than 10 minutes to play.

It was the regular season finale for the Bronchos, who improved to 12-4-2 while finishing fourth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association standings at 9-3-2.  UCO will host Lindenwood in the first round of the MIAA Post-season Tournament Wednesday at 3 p.m.

"We had several great chances to score and didn't, but we got the win and that's the important thing," head coach Mike Cook said.  "We've got some work to do before Wednesday and we're looking forward to the post-season."

Matacchiera knocked in the game-winner at the 80:31 mark on an easy shot from 10 feet away, with Quinn Tookey getting the assist.  Matacchiera bounced a shot off the top post from 20 feet out in drawing MSSU's goalkeeper out of the net before following it up with her third goal of the season.

UCO had plenty of scoring chances before that, but numerous shots sailed high or wide of the net while the Lions also made eight saves between the posts.

The Bronchos were all over MSSU at the start of the game, but couldn't score despite getting four corner kicks and taking four shots in the first six minutes.  The Lions didn't cross mid-field until nearly 10 minutes had elapsed and didn't take their first shot until the 30th minute.

Matacchiera and Emily Hahn took five shots apiece in the contest, with Hahn having two go off the top post, while Tess Barnard and Kate Foran had four shots each.

UCO's defensive dominated once again as the Bronchos recorded their 12th shutout of the season.  Brandi Bartley went the distance in the net, easily stopping the only two shots on goal she faced.
