UCO Goes 1-2 At Midwest Duals

Jordan Basks
KEARNEY, Neb. (Jan. 18) – No. 5-ranked Central Oklahoma succumbed to a pair of late comebacks in going 1-2 at the Midwest Duals here Saturday.

The Bronchos fell to fourth-rated Nebraska-Kearney 23-18 in the morning as the Lopers won the last two weights and were upset 18-15 by No. 9 Western State when the Mountaineers took the last four matches before ending the day with a 21-15 victory over California Baptist.

"Certainly we had our chances and opportunities to win all three duals and we just didn't get it done," head coach David James said.  "It was frustrating and we need to have some guys step up.  We've got to regroup and try to get better, that's the bottom line."

UCO, now 6-4 overall and 1-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, is back in action Wednesday when it goes to Oklahoma City to take on the Stars at 7 p.m.

Znick Ferrell's 6-4 sudden-victory triumph at 184 pounds gave the Bronchos an 18-17 lead with two matches left in the UNK dual, but the Lopers took both to pull out the win.

Top--ranked Romero Cotton edged Garrett Henshaw 1-0 at 197 to put UNK ahead and they stayed there when Kelsey Empting scored a takedown in the second sudden victory period to upend No. 8 Cody Dauphin 5-3.

UCO earned bonus points with three of their four wins.  No. 1 Jordan Basks scored his 13th fall of the season with a first-period pin at 149, top-rated Cory Dauphin stayed undefeated with a 15-0 technical fall at 157 and No. 5 Casy Rowell rolled to an 11-3 major decision at 133.

The Bronchos suffered a big loss at 165 when top-ranked Chris Watson lost for the first time this season, falling to unranked Brock Smith 5-3.

UCO built a 15-6 lead after the first six matches against Western State before the Mountaineers closed with four straight decisions – two by one point – to stun the Bronchos.

Basks, Dauphin and Watson all claimed major decision routs for UCO, while Rowell had an easy 9-2 victory.

The Bronchos won six consecutive matches to build a 21-5 lead against California Baptist and that was enough to hold off the Lancers, a first-year member of Division II.

Basks finished off a dominating day with his third bonus-point win, scoring his 11th first-period fall of the season.  The senior needed just 2:49 to deck Alex Anunciation and improve to 26-1 with 14 pins.

That was the only bonus win UCO, which also got victories from Rowell, Cory Dauphin, Watson, 141 Dustin Reed and 174 Zach Aylor.

Dauphin trimmed fifth-ranked Brady Bersano 4-1 as the defending national champion pushed his winning streak to 36, the fourth-longest in school history.
