Defense Leads UCO To Rout Of Pioneers

DENTON, Texas (Nov. 18) --
Central Oklahoma put the defensive clamps on Texas Woman's in a 59-35 drubbing on the final day of the Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premiere here Sunday afternoon.

The Bronchos limited the host Pioneers to 24.5-percent shooting (12-of-49) for the game and were particularly dominating down the stretch, outscoring TWU 23-4 over the final eight minutes to finally put the game away.

It was the third straight win for UCO (3-1) and the first time the Bronchos have held an opponent to less than 40 points since a 106-35 rout of Newman early in the 1996-97 season.

Jill Bryan led a balanced attack, scoring all 12 of her points in the second half while adding a team-high nine rebounds.  Alyssa Fuxa had 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists, with Whitney Dunn chipping in 10 points and Savannah Hamilton eight points and seven boards.

Fuxa was named Most Valuable Player of the two-day tournament and was joined on the all-tournament team by Bryan.

UCO trailed just once, that coming at 3-2 in the opening minutes, with a Hayley Bryan layup putting the Bronchos ahead for good.  Britney Morgan and Hamilton followed with back-to-back 3-pointers to bump the lead to 10-3 and it was a 12-4 advantage after a Fuxa jumper.

The Pioneers rallied to within three and were down just four (26-22) at intermission before Dunn opened the second half with three consecutive layups to push UCO's lead to 10 at 32-22.

TWU managed to stay close and trailed 36-31 when the Bronchos finally broke the game open.  Dunn drained a short jumper to start a 14-0 run that saw Jill Bryan and Hamilton score five points apiece and UCO pulled steadily away from there.

The Bronchos play their fifth straight road game to open the season Tuesday when they go to Bethany to meet NAIA power Southern Nazarene.
