Grizzlies Stun UCO

ALAMOSA, Colo. (Jan. 20) – Short-handed Central Oklahoma lost the first five matches in falling into a big hole and the sixth-ranked Bronchos never recovered in dropping a 28-10 decision to No. 11-ranked Adams State here Friday night.

UCO, which knocked off No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney last week and beat 20th-rated Colorado State-Pueblo 23-9 Thursday, never got going against the Grizzlies and lost seven of 10 matches in dropping to 6-4 on the year.

The Bronchos were without all three of their returning All-Americans with injuries to 133 Trison Graham, 157 Cory Dauphin and 174 Kelly Henderson and lost all three of those weights.

ASC got a fall at 157 and a major decision at 125 in jumping out to a 19-0 lead midway through the dual and UCO's only wins came from 165 Chris Watson, 184 Tanner Keck and heavyweight Cody Dauphin.

“I knew it was going to be a challenge and it was disappointing the way things turned on us in some of the matches that were tight,” head coach David James said.  “It kind of snowballed on us from a team perspective and we didn't respond.”

Watson ended UCO's dual-opening losing streak, jumping out to a 7-2 first-period lead before holding on down the stretch for a 9-7 victory over Justin Samora.

The second-ranked Keck had eight takedowns in rolling to a 17-5 major decision for his 20th win of the year, while Dauphin used an escape and riding time point to claim a 2-0 shutout in the final match of the night.

Dustin Reed, a mid-season transfer from Oklahoma who entered the night 7-1 with wins over two ranked wrestlers in filling in for Graham at 133, fell to No. 3 Ryan Fillingame 5-2 and the Bronchos lost two other matches to ranked Grizzlies.

Ky Corley led No. 4 Josh Hensley 4-3 after one period at 149 before Hensley rebounded to score the final seven points in claiming an 11-4 win and Jarrett Edison had a 6-1 lead in the opening period over No. 2 Luke McPeek at 197 when McPeek reversed Edison to his back and scored a stunning fall.

The Bronchos return to action next Wednesday, making the short trip to Oklahoma City to take on the NAIA No. 4-ranked Stars.
