Caldwell To The Rescue

LAWTON, Okla. (March 30) -- Senior Lacy Caldwell pulled out a three-set win in the swing match to lift Central Oklahoma to a hard-earned 5-4 upset of No. 18-ranked Cameron here Wednesday afternoon.

The Bronchos won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead before the Aggies came back to win three of the first five singles bouts to tie it. Caldwell came through in the final match, claiming a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles to give UCO the clutch Lone Star Conference victory.

"We haven't had much luck this season with close matches and this win shows that we can play tough and with heart," UCO coach Natalya Nikitina-Helvey said. "It was a huge match for us so we can get back in the race and I am so proud of the girls. We stepped up and pulled a couple of tough doubles wins and Lacy really came through at the end for us."

Caldwell teamed up with Anto Rossini for a tight 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, with Rose Cabato and Anna Kochigina claiming an 8-3 win at No. 3.

Rossini and Kochigina had straight-set singles wins to keep the Bronchos tied before Caldwell came through with her match-clinching victory.

UCO, which improved to 10-8 on the year and 3-2 in the Lone Star Conference with the win, stays in Lawton to take on St. Mary's in a neutral-site match Thursday.
