EDMOND (Nov. 8) – Falls by Daniel Morrison and Willie Gunter sparked No. 6-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 42-3 season-opening rout of Grand Canyon Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The 15-time national champion Bronchos won nine straight matches after losing the opening bout at 174 pounds, getting bonus-point wins from Scott Berens and Colby Robinson in addition to the two falls and two forfeits.

“It wasn't a bad outing for our first time out,” UCO coach David James said. “We were pretty aggressive for the most part and I liked some of the things I saw from our younger guys.”

The Antelopes took a 3-0 lead when Daniel Garay opened the dual with a 5-3 win over Cody Rowell at 174, but Morrison quickly put UCO in front to stay with a first-period fall at 184.

Gunter got his fall at 125 as the freshman had an impressive debut, needing 3:39 to dispose of Alex Contreras, and Berens followed a forfeit at 133 with an easy 10-2 win at 141.

Robinson then racked up four near-falls in a 16-0 technical at 149 and the Bronchos finished with decisions by 157 Kelly Henderson and 165 Mikey Morgan.

The Bronchos return to action Thursday, going to Norman to take on Division I power Oklahoma at 7 p.m.
