UCO Flurries Past Bearcats

Bronchos Win 2-1 With Two Second Half Goals In Two Minutes

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma scored two goals in two minutes to start the second half and that was enough for the Bronchos to secure a 2-1 win over Northwest Missouri Sunday afternoon in MIAA play at Tom Thompson Field.
 
UCO improved to 4-3-1 on the season with the win and opened league play with an unbeaten 1-0-1 record.
 
"We've had a long weekend with the road trip on Friday and back home for this game so I think we came out a little sluggish," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "But we talked about it at halftime that we needed to get some chances and finish them and we did that. Another good game for our defense and good for our offense to see some chances go in."
 
Central Oklahoma trailed 1-0 at halftime and saw a 5-4 deficit in shots taken. Northwest took the lead in the 42nd minute just moments before the break. The Bronchos are rarely outshot by opponents and it didn't take long to change that in the second half.
 
In the 47th minute, Sami Allen sent a ball forward to Jane Lockhart, who scored to tie the match. In the 49th minute, Allen was at it again. This time she sent a cross in front of the goal and Dannae Gutierrez headed home the game-winning score.
 
Central Oklahoma was outshot 5-4 in the first half. The Bronchos outshot Northwest Missouri 18-4 in the second half. The 22-9 advantage kept the pressure on all afternoon.
 
UCO held an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Bronchos and the Bearcats both took six corner kicks in the match.
 
Maddie Ortwein played the full 90 in goal again for the Bronchos. The redshirt freshman goalkeeper from Owasso, Oklahoma made four saves in the match.
 
Central Oklahoma began Sunday a three-game homestand as the university celebrates Homecoming. UCO hosts Rogers State on Friday at 7 p.m. and No. 12 Pittsburg State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Central will also host Emporia State on Oct. 4 at Tom Thompson Field.
