Central Oklahoma Ties Missouri Western In MIAA Opener

Host-Griffons Score In 80th Minute To Tie The Bronchos

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Central Oklahoma got a thrilling lead less than a second before halftime but a late goal by Missouri Western left UCO with a 1-1 draw in its MIAA opener Friday night.

Central Oklahoma is 3-3-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in league play. The Bronchos will return home and begin a four-game homestand on Sunday afternoon against Northwest Missouri. The match kicks off Homecoming Week at UCO. The Bronchos will also host Rogers State and Pittsburg State next weekend to conclude the festive week at Central.

"We really needed to convert more chances," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "We played really well in the first half to only score once. Our defense played so good all game limiting their chances. To give up one goal on the road is good but we needed to score more tonight."

UCO outshot MWSU 15-10 in the match. The Bronchos had a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. It was a lopsided affair in the first half with Central Oklahoma taking 10 shots, seven on goal, to Missouri Western's four total shots, none of which were on goal.

Caleah Carter gave the Bronchos a 1-0 lead and came in dramatic fashion. Senior midfielder Emma Nicholas sent a pass 50 yards away from the goal to a streaking Carter, who corralled the ball inside the box all alone with the goalkeeper. She slid the shot under for the goal as the time in the stadium counted to zero. Officials put one second on the clock following the score and the Bronchos went to halftime up 1-0.

Central led for 35 more minutes before Missouri Western's late goal. Maddie Ortwein played the full 90 in goal for the Bronchos and made three saves on the four shots on goal in the match.

UCO got five more shots in the second half put couldn't find the go-ahead.
