Central Misses Upset Bid In Season Opener

Bronchos Fall 2-1 To No. 15 Minnesota State Friday Night In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma lost a hard-fought battle with No. 15 Minnesota State Friday night in the 2026 season opener at Tom Thompson Field.
 
UCO conceded a goal just 50 seconds into the new season but settled in and held firm following the early spurt by the Mavericks of Mankato, Minnesota.
 
Central sophomore Sophia Gaskins equalized with a header off a corner kick in the 49th minute, but MSU found the back of the net with a header in the 70th minute to get ahead for good.
 
"We played well and I think we created enough chances to win, we just didn't execute those opportunities," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "Offensively, we did enough. We could have been better on defense, but we still had our chances. We just need to learn from this and move on."
 
Central Oklahoma (0-1-0) hosts Augustana on Sunday. The game has been moved up to a 10 a.m. kickoff to beat the sweltering August heat.
 
Friday night, UCO outshot Minnesota State 17-8 in the game, and had a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams took five shots in the first half, then the Bronchos held a blistering pace of 12-3 in the second half.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Ortwein made her first career start and made one save in goal. UCO also had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks in the match.
 
It was a corner that saw the first UCO goal of the season. In the 49th minute, junior Sheridan Ross took to the southeast corner of Tom Thompson field and the left-footed defender put a ball perfectly into the box where Gaskins found it.
 
The score was the second career goal for Gaskins, who put one home in the MIAA Championship quarterfinals last fall at Central Missouri.
