Bronchos Down Southern Arkansas in Season Opener

Balanced Attack Leads No. 12-ranked UCO

MAGNOLIA, Arkansas – Riley Roberts handed out a career-high 41 assists to lead No. 12-ranked Central Oklahoma past host Southern Arkansas Thursday night on the first day of the Mulerider Volleyball Tournament.

The Bronchos prevailed 25-20, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23 for their 13th straight season-opening win. UCO returns Friday to take on Texas-Tyler at 12 p.m. and Arkansas-Monticello at 4 before finishing the three-day event at 10 a.m. Saturday against Texas A&M-Kingsville.

"We were a little inconsistent, but that's to be expected for the first match of the season," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "I thought some of our new players really stepped up and played well in crucial situations for us."

UCO has nine newcomers on the roster and several came through to spark the Bronchos.

Senior veteran Roberts ignited the offensive attack with her 41 assists while adding 10 digs, four kills and two service aces. Freshman Kate Well had an impressive college debut, hitting .351 with 14 kills in 37 attacks with just one error to go along with seven assisted blocks.

Sophomore transfer Georgia Ahlert knocked down 11 kills, with freshmen Taylor Fenton (seven kills) and Brylee Moore (five kills, three blocks) also starting out strong in their first appearance. Sophomore Myla Unterweger had a solid all-around performance with 10 kills, a career-best 14 digs and three blocks. All-American Kaitlyn Parrott led the back row defense with 18 digs.

Central broke away from an 18-18 tie in the first set with three straight points, following an SAU attack error with kills by Unterweger and Wells to go up 21-18. Moore added two kills the rest of the way to help the Bronchos close it out.

The Muleriders came back to take the second set to even up the match, but UCO overcame an early 2-0 deficit to claim the third. Ahlert had a kill and service ace, Roberts added a solo block and Unterweger and Wells teamed up for a block during a 5-0 run that put the Bronchos in front to stay and they stayed comfortably ahead the rest of the set.

UCO closed out the match with a late surge in a back-and-forth fourth-set battle.

Southern Arkansas led 23-22 before an attack error tied it, then Wells and Moore teamed up for a block before Wells ended the match with an emphatic kill at the net.
