Bronchos Roll Over UNK

UCO Racks up 37 Hits in 14-7, 16-1 Wins

KEARNEY, Neb. -- Six players had at least five hits on the day to pace an offensive onslaught that carried Central Oklahoma to a lopsided doubleheader sweep of Nebraska-Kearney Friday afternoon.

The No. 20-ranked Bronchos finished with 37 hits and 30 runs to steamroll the Lopers 14-7 and 16-1, improving to 35-10 on the season and 12-4 in MIAA play. UCO moves on to Hays, Kansas Saturday to take on Fort Hays State in a noon twinbill.

"What a fun offensive day for our team," head coach Sam Maples said. "We did a ton of preparation this week and it was fun to see our girls trust that and have success.

"Outside of one tough inning in game one I thought we had very solid and pitching, which will always give our team a chance to win."

Freshman slugger Haley Gallo had six hits and six runs batted in to lead a balanced attack. Rylee Lemos, Brooklyn Ryan, Jenna Jobe, Hannah Demoff and Rylee Anglen each had five hits in the two games, with Lemos driving in seven runs and Anglen scoring six.

The Bronchos had 17 hits in the opener, getting three apiece from Lemos, Jobe, Demoff and Anglen. Lemos finished with five RBI, Gallo had four and Anglen scored four times.

UNK led 6-3 after two innings, but the Lopers couldn't slow down UCO's aggressive bats. The Bronchos scored four times in the third to take the lead before adding four more in the fifth to pull away.

Lemos blasted a grand slam to right field for her ninth home run of the season in the third to put Central up 7-6. Gallo belted her 11th homer in the fifth, this one a two-run shot to right-center, and Demoff added an RBI single as the Bronchos went up 11-6.

UNK scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth before UCO tacked on three more in the sixth on Gallo's two-run double and Bonnie Childs' sacrifice fly.

Shelby Beard went the first five innings to pick up the pitching win, improving to 18-5. Madison Hamilton threw the final two innings to close it out and then came right back to start the nightcap.

The freshman allowed four hits in four shutout innings to earn the win, evening her record at 2-2. Rookie Kirstyn Barnard tossed the fifth as the Bronchos closed out the run-rule rout.

Gallo went 4-for-5 to pace a 20-hit assault while Ryan went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Lemos, Jobe, Demoff, Anglen and Kennedy Clark added two hits each.

UCO wasted no time taking control, going up 3-0 in its initial at bat as Sherri Mason had a run-scoring single and Brooklyn Lyles a bases-loaded walk.

Clark's RBI single in the second made it 4-0, with Anglen adding an RBI bunt single and Gallo a run-scoring fielder's choice in the third to push the lead to 6-0.

The Bronchos really piled it on in the next two innings, pushing across four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to make it a 16-0 cushion.

Lemos had a two-run double to left-center and Ryan followed with a two-run single to center field in the fourth, while Lyles had the big blow in the fifth with a three-run homer to center. Ryan and Gallo added RBI hits in that frame.

UNK avoided a shutout with a single run in the bottom of the fifth.
