UCO Sweeps Tigers To Complete Perfect Weekend

No. 20 Bronchos 4-2 and 21-9 Wins, Improving to 37-10

HAYS, Kansas – Brooklyn Ryan's big three-run home run keyed a tight first-game win before Hannah Demoff and Kennedy Clark led a record-setting offensive show in the nightcap as Central Oklahoma swept a doubleheader from Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon,

The No. 20-ranked Bronchos overcame a 2-0 deficit to pull out a tough 4-2 victory in the opener behind Ryan's  clutch long ball in the fifth inning and then unleased a school-record 24-hit attack in a 21-9 second-game romp.

Demoff went 5-for-5 at the plate to tie a single-game hits record, while Clark had four hits with seven runs batted in, tied for the second-most in school history. Haley Gallo also had four hits and drove in two runs in setting a single-season freshman record for RBI with 58.

"It was such a fun day again for our hitters," head coach Sam Maples said. "I was really excited seeing our team getting into good counts at the plate and staying aggressive on good pitches to hit.

"Anytime you can pick up four road wins in the MIAA it's a great weekend. We will continue our preparation next week."

UCO scored 55 runs on 68 hits in back-to-back sweeps over Nebraska-Kearney and FHSU in improving to 37-10 on the season and 14-4 in league play. The Bronchos got back on the road next weekend to take on No. 2 Pittsburg State and No. 11 Missouri Southern.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener and it stayed that way until the fifth.

Rylee Anglen kept that inning alive with a two-out single up the middle, Rylee Lemos walked, and Ryan followed with her big blast. The junior drove her fourth homer of the season over the left-center field fence to give UCO a 3-2 lead.

The Bronchos added an insurance run in the seventh on Clark's run-scoring groundout that scored Lemos, who drew a walk to open the inning before advancing on Ryan's bunt single and a groundout.

FHSU threatened in its final at back with a pair of one-out singles. UCO brought in Carleigh Kinnaird to close out the game and the freshman standout delivered with back-to-back strikeouts to pick up her third save.

Madison Hamilton had a big-time relief outing for the Bronchos, taking over in the circle in the first inning after the Tigers took their quick lead. The freshman gave up just two hits and no runs with four strikeouts in six innings work to earn the win, improving to 3-2.

There was no such suspense in the second game.

UCO broke on top 7-0 in its initial bat behind Clark's three-run homer to center field. Mari Scott added a two-run triple while Lemos and Sherri Mason added RBI singles.

Clark led off the second with her second homer of the game – and sixth of the season – and Mason chipped in a run-scoring single to make it 9-0. Clark continued her big game in the third with a two-run single and Demoff added a run-scoring double to up the lead to 12-0.

RBI hits by Gallo, Demoff and Kindal Biggs made it 15-1 in the fourth and UCO's bats stayed hot in the fifth with six more runs.

Demoff's two-run homer down the left field line was the big hit, while Ryan, Gallo and Clark added RBI singles.

That gave the Bronchos a 21-1 cushion, which was more than enough to absorb FHSU's eight-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth. Kinnaird started and went the first three innings to pick up the pitching win, improving to 15-3.
