Late Comeback, Record-setting Offense Lead UCO To Sweep

No. 11 Bronchos Rallied Past Eastern New Mexico Before Routing New Mexico Highlands

EDMOND – A stirring seventh-inning rally provided the momentum for a record-setting rout as Central Oklahoma swept a pair of games on the second day of the UCO/OC Softball Festival Saturday evening at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The No. 11-ranked Bronchos overcame a five-run deficit to pull off an improbable 6-5 win over Eastern New Mexico in the opener before scoring a school-record 26 runs in a 26-7 drubbing of New Mexico Highlands.

UCO improved to 7-2 in stretching its winning streak to four straight. The Bronchos finish the three-day event Sunday at 1 p.m. against Black Hills State.

"I was really proud of the way we played today," head coach Sam Maples said. "This team never quits and we fought for a gritty win against a very good Eastern New Mexico team.

"I thought we did a nice job in the circle and overall tonight was powered by our offense. It's fun to see records broke and I'm really proud of our athletes."

Central trailed 5-1 and appeared in dire straits entering the final inning of the first game against ENMU, but the Bronchos didn't record an out in scoring five runs on four hits to stun the Greyhounds.

Rylee Anglen walked to open the inning and the speedy senior barely beat out the throw to second on Rylee Lemos' grounder to third to put two runners on. Brooklyn Ryan roped a double to the right-center field gap to score Anglen and Jenna Jobe followed with another double, this one a two-run shot to left field.

That pulled the Bronchos within 5-4 and the rally continued when Kennedy Clark drilled a hit off the pitcher to put runners on first and third. Haley Gallo's single through the right side tied it, Hannah Demoff walked to load the bases and pinch-runner Mari Scott raced home on a wild pitch to end the dramatic comeback.

The Greyhounds led 5-0 after five innings, with UCO's first run coming in the fifth on Clark's RBI single.

Ryan and Clark had two hits apiece to lead the offense, while Carleigh Kinnaird picked up the pitching win. The rookie gave up two hits and two runs with five strikeouts in four innings of relief work.

The late comeback over the Greyhounds fueled a devastating opening surge against NMSU. The Bronchos scored nine runs on just four hits in the first inning, then pushed across 13 runs on 12 hits in a long second inning to seize a monstrous 22-0 lead.

Anglen lined a three-run double to left-center and Demoff belted a two-run double off the left field wall to key the opening-inning outburst, which paled in comparison to the second inning eruption.

UCO paraded 18 batters to the plate in the second and Lemos was the catalyst with a pair of three-run triples in tying her own single-game record while also becoming the school's career triples leader with 19.

Gallo and Brooklyn Ryan also had two hits in the inning, with Ryan driving in a pair of runs. Clark, Brooklyn Lyles and Bonnie Childs added RBI singles in pushing the lead to an astronomical 22-0.

The Cowgirls scored three times in the top of the third, with Demoff's sacrifice fly making it 23-3 in the third to tie the record for runs that was set in a 23-2 win over Southwestern Oklahoma in 1983. The Bronchos broke that 43-year-old mark in the fourth when Clark blasted a three-run homer to left.

UCO finished with 24 RBI to break the previous record of 19 set last year against Fort Hays State and ended with 20 hits, just one off the record.

Ryan went 4-for-4 to lead the offensive assault while Gallo had three hits. Lemos, Jobe, Clark and Mari Scott added two hits apiece, with Lemos' six RBI a career high.

Kinnaird earned the pitching win, starting and throwing two no-hit innings with three strikeouts before fellow freshmen Kirstyn Barnard and Sydney Griffin finished out the game.
