Bronchos Beat Southwest Baptist 6-1 For Opening Week Win

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma ran away with a 6-1 victory Friday at Broncho Courts, getting through Southwest Baptist in short time.

UCO is 1-1 on the season following the win. The Bronchos came up short against Top 25 UT Tyler on Thursday in the opener. Central Oklahoma's trip to Arkansas Tech this weekend has been postponed.

"We were better today and got to play some really good tennis," UCO head women's tennis coach Joe Vann said. "Although we didn't get to play all nine matches, we still got some good work in and got the job done."

Southwest Baptist was open at No. 3 doubles. Pete Komada and Mei Hasegawa won 6-1 at the No. 1 position and Anika Ouwejan and Ayaka Koga won 6-2 at the No. 2 spot to give UCO a quick 1-0 lead.

Hasegawa won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, Komada won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, and Ouwejan won 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 3 singles. SBU got its only point with a 6-4, 4-6 (10-7) win at No. 4 singles. Karyna Yurchenko picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles and the Bronchos added one more with a forfeit at the No. 6 spot by the shorthanded Bearcats.

UCO had six matches in February and only one on the raod. That was Sunday at Arkansas Tech. The Bronchos will now finish the month at home pending the rescheduled date with ATU. Central hosts Ouachita Baptist Feb. 13, Southeastern Oklahoma State Feb. 27, and Colorado State Pueblo on Feb. 28.
