Bronchos Blank Fort Lewis In Home Opener

EDMOND – Shelby Beard and Carleigh Kinnaird teamed up to pitch a six-hit shutout as No. 11-ranked Central Oklahoma blanked Fort Lewis 5-0 Friday evening on the first day of the UCO/OC Softball Festival sponsored by Raising Cane's at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

It was the home opener for the Bronchos, who improved to 5-2 on the young season. UCO returns Saturday to face Eastern New Mexico at 3:30 p.m. and New Mexico Highlands at 5:45 before finishing the three-day event against Black Hills State at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Beard started and went the first five innings, giving up five hits and one walk while striking out three in improving to 3-1. Kinnaird struck out four and allowed just one hit in the final two innings.

Brooklyn Ryan, Haley Gallo and Bonnie Childs had two hits apiece to lead a 10-hit attack, with four of those hits coming in the first inning as the Bronchos grabbed a quick 3-0 lead.

Right fielder Makenzie Fithian saved a run in the top of the first inning, gunning down a Fort Lewis runner who attempted to score from second on a hit, and UCO took control in its initial bat.

Ryan got things going with a one-out bunt single and promptly stole second before racing home on Kennedy Clark's two-out single up the middle. Haley Gallo kept the inning going with a double to center field, then Hannah Demoff ripped a double to left to plate both runners and make it 3-0.

The Bronchos made it a 5-0 cushion in the third. Jenna Jobe led off with a double to right field, Clark walked and Gallo followed with a first-pitch RBI single to center before Childs added a two-out RBI hit.

FLC's only scoring chance came in the third when the Skyhawks put runners at second and third with two outs, but Beard got out of that jam with a strikeout and UCO coasted in from there.
