Offense Powers UCO To Friday Sweep

Bronchos Scored 19 Runs in Routing Augustana and Upper Iowa

SHAWNEE, Kan. – Central Oklahoma broke out the bats in impressive fashion Friday, rapping out 23 hits in a pair of run-rule routs on the first day of the Top Gun Midwest College Classic.

The No. 17-ranked Bronchos slugged four home runs in a 10-2 romp over Augustana before cruising past Upper Iowa 9-1, ending both games in the sixth inning.

UCO improved to 15-4 in running its winning streak to five straight. The Bronchos return Saturday to face Minnesota-Duluth at 2:45 p.m. and Rockhurst at 5 p.m. to finish off the weekend.

"I was very proud of the way we jumped out in front both games offensively," head coach Sam Maples said. "I thought we pitched really well and played incredible defense. As a coach, you can't ask for much more in the way they competed and made adjustments all day."

Rylee Lemos got the Bronchos off to a quick start in the opener, smacking a lead-off home to center field in the bottom of the first. Kennedy Clark added a run-scoring single and Brooklyn Lyles a sacrifice fly to stake UCO to a 3-0 lead.

The Bronchos added a pair of unearned runs in the second, then made it 7-0 in the third when Lyles reached on a one-out single and Sherri Mason followed with a two-home bomb to left field for her first career homer.

Augie scored once in the top of the fourth, but UCO matched that in the bottom half of the frame on Brooklyn Ryan's leadoff homer to left. The Vikings scored their final run in the fifth to make it 8-2 before the Bronchos finished it in the sixth.

Haley Gallo opened the sixth with Central's fourth homer, this one a long drive to center field. Jenna Jobe and Hannah Demoff drew consecutive walks before Lyles ripped an RBI double to center that gave UCO the eight-run lead to end it.

Gallo went 3-for-4 to lead a 12-hit attack while Lemos, Ryan and Lyles all had two hits.

Shelby Beard went the distance in the circle to pick up the pitching win. The junior scattered eight hits while striking out eight in moving to 8-2 on the season.

The Peacocks answered UCO's unearned run in the top of the first with a single score in the bottom of the frame before the Bronchos took control with a four-run outburst in the second.

Demoff and Lyles started that inning with back-to-back singles and Mason followed with an RBI base hit up the middle. Rylee Anglen singled to load the bases and Lemos promptly cleared them with a triple down the right field line to make it 5-1.

Lemos followed Anglen's leadoff single in the fourth with an RBI double to right and Jobe opened the fifth with a big drive over the center field wall for a solo homer that upped the lead to 7-1.

UCO made it an eight-run cushion in the sixth when Lemos had a one-out single and Gallo drove the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for a two-out, two-run homer.

Lemos and Anglen had three hits apiece to pace the 11-hit assault.

Carleigh Kinnaird earned the pitching win, moving to 7-1. The rookie gave up five hits and one run while striking out five in five innings before Madison Hamilton finished it off with a 1-2-3 outing in the sixth.
