Bronchos Win Two More In Kansas

Central Oklahoma Beats Minnesota Duluth, Rockhurst

SHAWNEE, Kan. – Central Oklahoma powered past Minnesota Duluth before it grinded out a win over Rockhurst to get through Day 2 of the Top Gun Midwest Sports Classic with two more victories.

UCO beat Duluth 9-1 in a five-inning run-rule and then won 4-3 over Rockhurst in the nightcap. The Bronchos are now 17-4 on the season and have won seven in a row.

Shelby Beard gave up a leadoff home run against Duluth but then struck out six over the five-inning win for the Bronchos. The junior pitcher improved to 9-2 on the season with the win. She only gave up three more hits after the leadoff homer.

Down 1-0, Central Oklahoma got right back in the bottom half. Rylee Lemos led off with a walk and then stole second. She advanced to third on a quick double by Brooklyn Ryan and then scored on Haley Gallo's sacrifice fly. Kennedy Clark followed that with an RBI groundout to score Ryan and give the Bronchos a 2-1 lead.

The Bronchos blew it open in the third. Rylee Anglen led off with a single and Lemos walked to first behind her. Then Gallo blasted a three-run home run to push the lead to 5-1. Jenna Jobe then doubled with one out and Hannah Demoff put one over the fence to make it 7-1, Bronchos.

In the fourth, Sherri Mason got on first on an error and Anglen followed with a walk to put two on. Lemos then singled and Mason scored on the play to make it 8-1. Anglen later scored on a wild pitch to make it the final 9-1.

The Bronchos found themselves down 1-0 again in the second game. After a leadoff walk and a stolen base, Carleigh Kinnaird struck out the next two batters. But a fielding error allowed the Rockhurst to score and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

RU made it 3-0 in the fourth with a two-run home run. Then Broncho comeback began.

Mason drilled a two-run homer, scoring Brooklyn Lyles on the play, and it was 3-2. Then in the fifth, Clark hit a two-RBI single to score Ryan and Gallo and the Bronchos had a 4-3 lead.

Kinnaird improved to 8-1 on the season with the win. She threw 7.0 innings, allowed just two hits and struck out 10 batters in the victory.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled to play Minnesota State – Moorhead on Sunday morning at 11:45 a.m. That will wrap up the three-day, five-game tournament for the Bronchos.

UCO returns home next week for a non-conference doubleheader with Drury on Friday, March 7 at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.
