UCO Overpowers Fort Smith For Key Road Win

Central Oklahoma Wins 69-56 At Arkansas Fort Smith Thursday Night

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Central Oklahoma swept the season series with Arkansas - Fort Smith thanks to an impressive 69-56 road win Thursday night.
 
UCO improved to 16-14 on the season and is now 9-9 in the MIAA. The Bronchos wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Northeastern State.
 
The MIAA Basketball Championship is next week in Kansas City, Missouri and the Bronchos can, depending on Saturday's league results, finish either seventh, eighth, or ninth in final standings.
 
Matthew Willenborg led the Bronchos with 33 points on Thursday night. He scored the game's first basket and his dunk just four minutes into the action gave UCO an 11-2 lead.
 
The Bronchos never trailed in Thursday's game.
 
Willenborg put up 30 for the fourth time this season. He was 11-for-17 from the floor on Thursday night, including a tremendous 5-for-6 from behind the 3-point line. He also went 6-for-8 at the free-throw line. Willenborg added 11 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
 
Josh Nwankwo also scored in double figures and gave the Bronchos 14 points. He went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line. Nwankwo added three assists, two rebounds, two steals, and one block.
 
Parker Hannah added nine points with one 3-pointer, Jack Robinson and Trey Tuck gave the Bronchos four each, and Marcus Zeigler Jr. (three) and Brady Hancuff (two) also scored.
 
Central Oklahoma jumped out to the big lead and dominated most of the first 20 minutes. UCO led 37-24 at the break.
 
The Bronchos stretched the lead to 17 points, 51-34, midway through the second half before Fort Smith put together a 16-2 rally to cut it down to three points, 53-50, with 6:16 remaining.
 
UCO answered with a 12-2 run that spanned nearly the final six minutes of the game and secured the key late season victory.
