Bronchos Toppled By Topeka's Washburn

Central Oklahoma Drops MIAA Home Game To League Champion

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma fell short of an upset bid against No. 3 Washburn and lost the MIAA game 82-58 at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos are now 15-12 on the season following the setback and are 8-8 in the MIAA. UCO plays host to No. 25 Central Missouri Saturday afternoon and will finish the regular season on the road next week.

Central Oklahoma never led in the game on Thursday night. The Bronchos fell behind early and struggled to keep up with Washburn in the first half. UCO made 9 of 25 shots in the first 20 minutes. Washburn made 9 of 17 3-pointers and held a 51-30 lead at the break.

UCO didn't go quietly though. The Bronchos made a few rallies to keep Washburn engaged in the second half. Central could only narrow the deficit to 14 points in the final 20 minutes.

The Bronchos ended the game shooting 34.4 percent overall, making 21 of 61 total shots. Central was 5-for-21 behind the 3-point line and 11-for-21 at the free-throw line. The 34.4 overall field goal percentage on Thursday is a season low for Central Oklahoma.

Matthew Willenborg led the Bronchos with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and nine blocked shots, nearly recording a triple-double in the game. He also had three steals. The junior forward went 5-for-16 from the floor, 1-for-4 from deep, and 6-for-9 at the line.

Earlier this month, Willenborg set the UCO career blocked shots record, passing Jason Pritchett (147, 2000-03). On Thursday, he set a single game blocks record for the Bronchos with nine.

Parker Hannah also scored in double figures for the Bronchos. The junior guard had 11 points, making 4 of 13 shots including 3 of 9 treys. Marcus Zeigler Jr. scored nine points, Josh Nwankwo added eight, and Jack Robinson chipped in four points.

The Bronchos also got five points from Chase Sucharda off the bench. Connor Newton added three and Brady Hancuff scored one.

Central Oklahoma hosts No. 25 Central Missouri on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. with seniors being honored prior to tipoff.

UCO plays at Arkansas Fort Smith and Northeastern State next weekend. The MIAA Basketball Championship is scheduled for March 4-8 in Kansas City, Missouri. The Bronchos only need one win in the final three games to clinch a spot in the postseason tournament.
