Bronchos Host Ouachita Friday

Central Oklahoma Continues Five-Game Homestand

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma continues a season-opening homestand Friday with a non-conference dual against Ouachita Baptist at Broncho Courts. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.

UCO is 1-1 on the young season after just one week of play. The Bronchos lost to No. 18 UT Tyler before beating Southwest Baptist last week in Edmond. Ouachita Baptist is also 1-1, falling to Arkansas Fort Smith before beating Christian Brothers last week.

Friday marks the first time the teams have met in Edmond in the previous 20 years of recorded history. UCO is 5-0 against OBU since 2006 with all five wins coming in Arkansas.

The Bronchos are led by Pete Komada, the senior All-American who is ranked 15th in the country. She was named MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week on Wednesday. Komada went 4-0 on opening weekend, including a big upset in doubles play against UT Tyler.

With teammate Mei Hasegawa, a mid-year transfer, Komada won 7-5 against the seventh-ranked doubles team in the country on Thursday against Tyler. The duo won 6-1 on Friday against SBU.

Anika Ouwejan and Ayaka Koga are 2-0 at No. 2 doubles. Milana Quick and Hui Soo came up short against Tyler and Haley Hibbetts and Karyna Yurchenko picked up a win via forfeit against Southwest Baptist.

In singles play, Komada is 2-0, while most everyone else is 1-1. Hasegawa, Ouwejan, and Soo all picked up wins on Friday to bounce back. Yurchenko is 1-0 and Dilay Ata is 0-2 on the young season.

UCO is scheduled to play two more home games this month to make it five straight in Edmond to open the season. The Bronchos host Southeastern Oklahoma State and Colorado State – Pueblo on Feb. 27-28. The Bronchos play five matches in two weeks in March all on the road. UCO begins MIAA play after that.
