Bronchos Stun No. 13-ranked Washburn

UCO Sweeps the Ichabods in Key MIAA Battle

EDMOND – Caroline Clayton hasn't been used in a serving role much this season, but the sophomore delivered a clutch ace on match point to cap Central Oklahoma's stunning sweep of No. 13-ranked Washburn Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos took the first set 25-20 and dominated in a 25-16 second-set rout before Clayton's missile that landed just inside the back line finished off a come-from-behind 25-23 triumph in the third. It was Clayton's first serve of the night and only her second ace of the season.

UCO improved to 15-5 overall and 4-2 in MIAA play with its fifth straight win. The Ichabods had a sixth-match winning streak snapped in falling to 17-4 and 5-2.

"That was a great win for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Washburn is really good, but we came out ready to go and made a lot of big plays. We played well and I'm really proud of the team for the grit and fight they showed tonight."

Georgia Ahlert led the Bronchos with 13 kills, four blocks and two aces, with six of those kills coming in the final set. Myla Unterweger posted 12 kills and two blocks, while Clayton finished with seven kills, two blocks and the big ace.

UCO also got five kills apiece from Riley Roberts and Kate Wells, with Taylor Fenton adding four. Roberts also handed out 33 assists to go with five blocks and Wells made seven blocks.

Morgan Manning led the back row defense with 16 digs in addition to making seven assists. Kaitlyn Parrott returned after a two-week absence and chipped in 15 digs, with Jenna Monroe (nine digs) and Emma Halstead (eight) also making key defensive contributions.

The first set went back-and-forth early before Washburn took a 14-12 lead. The Bronchos answered with a 5-0 run that started with an Unterweger kill and ended with a combined block by Roberts and Wells that put UCO on top 17-14.

It was a 22-17 lead after a Clayton kill, with Ahlert's tomahawk shot at the net and a Monroe ace finishing off the 25-20 win.

Central took control early in the second set, grabbing a quick 6-1 advantage as Ahlert and Unterweger had two kills each. The Bronchos pulled away from there, going ahead 20-8 on an Ahlert kill that ended a 6-0 spurt before coasting in for the nine-point win.

That put Washburn on the ropes and Ichabods responded in the third set, jumping out to a 9-4 lead.

But UCO would not be denied.

The Bronchos chipped away at the deficit, finally pulling even at 13-13 when Ahlert and Roberts teamed up for a block. UCO went up 17-14 before the Ichabods came back to take a 20-19 lead to set up a thrilling finish.

Clayton and Ahlert had back-to-back kills after a Washburn error to put the Bronchos ahead 22-20 and it was 23-21 after another Ahlert shot. The Ichabods tied it with two straight points, but Ahlert's emphatic kill at the net and Clayton's dramatic jump serve ace finished off the upset.

UCO returns to action next weekend, traveling to Joplin, Missouri for a pair of matches in the MIAA In-season Tournament.
