Bronchos Blank Emporia Sunday In Edmond

Central Oklahoma Is Unbeaten In Seven Matches After 1-0 Win

EDMOND – A Goal by Sophia Gaskins in the 52nd minute was all Central Oklahoma needed to beat Emporia State on Sunday in MIAA play at Tom Thompson Field.

UCO 1, Emporia 0.

The Bronchos improved to 6-3-2 overall this season and are now 3-0-2 in the MIAA. The win on Sunday has Central unbeaten in its last seven contests, including the first five league matches.

"That was a stressful game with all the shots taken, it never felt like a 1-0 game," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "I thought we put a lot of pressure on Emporia but they did the same to us. Credit to our team for rising to the occasion. That's the kind of win you can really build from."

Maddie Ortwein played another full 90 in goal for the Bronchos and recorded her fourth shutout of the season. The redshirt freshman goalkeeper made a career-high eight saves on Sunday.

"Really proud of Maddie," Muhamedagic said. "Some of those shots on goal were great chances for Emporia but Maddie stepped up and got it done for us. That was really big."

Emporia ended the game with a 17-16 advantage in shots taken, and an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. The 33 combined shots are the most in a game this season for UCO. Emporia also had a 4-2 advantage in corners.

With that, it was the Bronchos that got the win. In the 52nd minute, UCO was awarded a free kick when Dannae Gutierrez was taken down right on the line of the 18-yard box. Greta Likens took the free kick and after the ball caromed off the first touch, Gaskins made a play on it.

Gaskins took the shot near the top of the box with her body turned back away from the goal. But she lifted the ball up into the top left corner and in for the score. Her third goal of the season gave the Bronchos a 1-0 lead and enough to get the win.

Sami Allen and Caleah Carter took three shots each for the Bronchos. Gaskins and Kaitlyn Cotton each had two shots.

Central Oklahoma will now turn to a heavy road schedule for the final three weeks of the season. The Bronchos play at Central Missouri and Missouri Southern next weekend, then at Washburn and Newman the following weekend.

UCO hosts Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney and wraps up the regular season at Northeastern State.
