Bronchos Blitz Hays, Earn Key Lateseason Win

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma rallied in the second half for a 2-1 win over Fort Hays State Friday evening at Tom Thompson Field.

UCO improved to 8-5-3 overall with the win and is now 5-2-3 in the MIAA. The Bronchos have two games left in the regular season and are in fourth place in the MIAA standings ahead of the postseason tournament next month. The top four teams host a playoff game.

"We did a good job of turning things around at halftime and we really needed to," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic. "We had so many chances but we weren't really playing at the right level. We got even more chances in the second half after the adjustment and it worked out well for us."

The Bronchos trailed 1-0 at halftime but Ariana Kingsberry and Emma Nicholas both scored goals in the second half to swing the result.

The deficit wasn't for a lack of chances though. The Bronchos outshot Fort Hays State 12-4 in the first half and then went into overdrive with a 20-2 advantage in the second half. After 90 minutes, UCO took 32 shots to Hays's six.

Maddie Ortwein played the full 90 in goal and only allowed the one score on a penalty in the 26th minute.

In the 58th minute, Camila Mujica took a shot from inside the box and off the rebound, Kinsberry hammered home the game-tying goal. Then in the 73rd, Aurora Creevy sent in a corner kick that Nicholas got a hold of for the game-winning score.

It was the second career game winner for Nicholas, the midfielder from Tulsa with 77 career games played. She will be honored prior to kickoff on Sunday afternoon along with her fellow seniors Sami Allen, Monica Bird, Claire Mullen, and Izzy Van Zanten.

UCO hosts Nebraska Kearney at 1 p.m. The Bronchos have clinched a berth in the MIAA Women's Soccer Championship are will try to secure the home game Nov. 1 in the quarterfinals. The four advancing teams meet for the semifinals Nov. 6 in Wichita, Kansas. The championship match is scheduled for Nov. 8.
