Bronchos Tie Missouri Southern In Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. – Central Oklahoma and Missouri Southern played to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon in the MIAA.

The Bronchos got a late goal by Kaitlyn Cotton to tie the match, 1-1, then Maddie Ortwein saved a penalty kick in the 84th minute to keep the game tied.

Central Oklahoma is 6-4-3 overall on the season following the tie and now 3-1-3 in the MIAA.

"We did not play our best today and it showed," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "We needed to create more chances and we couldn't get that going. We did play well on defense. We did enough to not lose and that's a positive to take away."

Central Oklahoma continues a four-match road swing with trips to Washburn in Topeka, Kansas and Newman in Wichita, Kansas next weekend. UCO returns home to face Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney the following weekend in Edmond.

Sunday in Joplin, UCO did outshoot the Lions. The Bronchos put up 16 total shots and put eight of those on target. Missouri Southern took 14 shots and put four on goal.

Ortwein played the full 90 and made three saves, including the late penalty. The Bronchos also earned three corner kicks in the contest and didn't allow a corner by MSSU.

Missouri Southern scored its goal in the 23rd minute. Cotton equalized in the 76th minute for the Bronchos.
